The Mind & Body Connection in
Athletic Injury & Recovery

Join The Prescription Playbook as they bring in both Dr. Sterling Elliott, PharmD, BCMTMS and Dylan Edwards, DPT to discuss the mind and body connection within athletic injury and recovery.

After an injury athletes face many challenges on their road to recovery including mental and physical hardships. Join us to discuss how to support athletes through mindful pain management, understand the power of the mind as a means to support recovery, and gain tangible tools and skills that we as adult impactors can use ourselves and also encourage our athletes to use.

DR. STERLING ELLIOTT, PHARMD, BCMTMS

Sterling Elliott is a clinical pharmacist and Pharmacy Team Lead for Ambulatory Surgery Practice at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Elliott also maintains an appointment to the faculty of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He specializes in pharmacy related to surgery and procedures with particular expertise in issues related to post-operative pain management in ambulatory surgeries. Dr. Elliott’s expertise on patient centered pain management education has been featured on Chicago radio and television outlets including WGN Radio 720AM, WBEZ-FM, WVON-AM, FOX32 Chicago, WFLD-TV, and WTTW-TV PBS in Chicago. Nationally, he has appeared on Newsy, Marketplace on NPR, and in the New York Times. In his faculty role in orthopaedics, Dr. Elliott provides guidance and expertise to the department’s attending physicians, fellows and residents, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners on pain management matters. He has presented continuing education programs on novel pain management strategies for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and physicians. Dr. Elliott has lent his expertise to legislative advocacy efforts at the federal level, and he has published expert opinion insight on taking a novel approach to pain management. His commentary calling on Congress to act on federal legislation was published in the Chicago Tribune. He is currently the preceptor for pharmacy student rotations in operational OR work and ambulatory OR work. He has served as a research advisor for a longitudinal experience in the department’s PGY1 residency program.
In addition to his work in the area of surgery, Dr. Elliott has experience as a staff pharmacist at several hospitals in Florida and prior experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from September 2007 through May 2010. During that time, Dr. Elliott supervised operation of the clean room in the principal pharmacy on the NMH campus. In addition to his institutional experience, Dr. Elliott collaborated on a business enterprise where he served as a consultant pharmacist to surgery and dialysis centers throughout South Florida.
Upon returning to NMH in August 2016, Dr. Elliott resumed his focus on surgery and procedures working in the OR group. During that time, he has guided the student education initiative and created a process for counseling patients receiving eye drops following surgery. Currently, he is leading a program that teaches students and surgical residents to educate patients about the responsible use of pain medications. Patients are taught to manage their opioid use based upon their level of functionality after surgery and use non-opioid options based on the quality of the pain. Dr. Elliott’s research interests focus on studying pain management after surgery. He is currently involved in an interdisciplinary project though the Surgical Quality Improvement Program at Northwestern Medicine. His work focuses on training pharmacy and medical learners to provide pain education as an interdisciplinary team. The project has received grant funding through private sources and is currently seeking NIH funding. Dr. Elliott is also the principal investigator and research advisor on a quality study to evaluate the effectiveness of the opioid teaching program. His future research interests include studying functionality-based pain management teaching to demonstrate morbidity outcome benefits.
Dr. Elliott is licensed to practice in the State of Illinois and is Board Certified in Medication Therapy Management (BCMTMS) by the National Board of Medication Therapy Management. He is a 2007 graduate of the Chicago College of Pharmacy, Midwestern University where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Dr. Elliott also has a Master of Science in Broadcast Journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Franklin&Marshall College. He and his family live in the northern suburbs of Chicago. When he is not practicing pharmacy or spending time with his family, he is an avid (although struggling) golfer who is hopelessly deluded into believing that one day he will be much better.
